Race Report: Final round New Zealand Cross Country Championship - Ashhurst
Rider: Adam Reeves
Team: Yamaha Off-Road Team
Bike: 2009 Yamaha YZF 450
Coming into this race its fair to say I was absolutely shitting myself, I had put a lot of effort into this Championship and after crashing hard at the Waipukurau round and injuring myself I thought I'd blown it.
But a solid 2nd place at round 3 in Nelson put me back into the points lead, but with my team mate Adrian Smith & Suzuki's Mark Penny sitting in just 2 points back from me it meant who ever finished on top at the final would take the title.
I had gone over & worried about everything from how many hours my bike had done to my 'still bothering me' injury though to the terrible weather we were getting.
But come the start of the race I forgot all that and focused on the job at hand, I didn't get the best of starts climbing the first hill in 21st position, I seen that Adrian had grabbed himself the hole shot so I went to work on the field, the track was fairly muddy from all the rain we've had and it was also a technical and really physical track which worked in my favour.
By the end of the first lap I had moved into 2nd position but I could not see Adrian as he had over a minute's lead on me, on the second lap I rode like a man possessed and was able to catch and pass Adrian for the lead, and set about building a sizable lead.
Over the course of the race I never let up and kept pushing and didn't let the idea of winning the Championship enter my head until I crossed finish line.
By which after 3 hours of racing I crossed the finish line in 1st position leading home the 2nd place rider by over 12 minutes.
I'd have to say its a huge relief to finally win this, the only downside I can think of is having to go and buy some new graphics so I can run the number 1 plate . ha-ha a small price to pay I say.
